What is the Gospel?
Gospel means "good news." To talk about the Gospel is to talk about good news. Isaiah spoke of one who would bring "good news" to the poor, brokenhearted, and captive in Isaiah 61:1. In this world inundated with news, usually negative news, we could use some good news. What exactly is that good news?
The Bible succinctly summarizes the good news in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
The good news is found in the death of Jesus Christ. He died for our sins. When He was nailed to the cross, it was not because of His own wrongdoing, but ours. He suffered the penalty of sin on behalf of sinners. The proof of His death lies in the grave. He was buried. But the grave could not contain Him. After three days, He rose to new life. Because of Jesus' actions, all who repent of their sin (Acts 2:38) and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:16) will be saved from their sins and the penalty of their sins.
This is the Gospel. This is the Good News.
1 Corinthians 15:3 declares that this message of the good news is of "first importance." Everything that the church does should be centered on that which is of first importance. Gospel Life Church is a gospel-centered church. Our ministry is built around the Gospel because of the priority of the Gospel in God's plan. We are Grounded in the Gospel, Growing in the Gospel, and Going with the Gospel.
