March 19: COVID-19 Update

Dear Gospel Life Church,

Lamentations 3:22 reminds us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end.” Jeremiah wrote this during one of Israel’s darkest days. Even in the darkest of times, we can remember that God’s steadfast love continues to be poured out daily on his children.

Yesterday, the elders met to discuss what course of action we should take in light of the spread of COVID-19 and the government’s recommendations. We believe that it is best to cancel all formal church ministries on the property, including the morning services for the next three Sundays (March 22, 29, and April 5). Whether or not we will need to extend this cancellation longer will be decided and communicated on Thursday, April 2. This decision does not mean that the ministry of GLC will be put on hold, but that we will shift our ways to minister to one another. During these weeks, the church office will also be closed, but communication to the office (via email and phone) will continue to be received.

This was a very difficult decision to make, but we felt a necessary decision. It was not made out of a spirit of fear. We are sure that the onslaught of COVID-19 falls within the Father’s sovereign plan - just like days of peace. This decision was driven by the strong suggestion of our government officials not to gather in groups of more than 10. Although not mandated, multiple medical organizations and medical professionals have also provided similar guidance. We believe in a spirit of submission to our God given authority that we should follow suit. Further, we also believe that loving our neighbors compels us to refrain from gathering temporarily at this time (Matt 22:37-40).

As was mentioned earlier, this decision does not mean that the ministry of GLC will be put on hold. Rather out of necessity, we will change the way we do ministry. During this time, we will plan to minister in the following ways:

  • Recorded Sunday Messages
Pastor Dave will continue to prepare and record messages for each Sunday. These messages will be pre-recorded and posted to the Light for the Way Youtube channel by 8 a.m. each Sunday. We will also distribute links to the sermon via email, Facebook, Twitter, and our website.

  • Weekday Devotionals
Every week day, you will receive a link in an email for a short devotional video from our leadership team. The video will contain a short reading of Scripture and some thoughts for the day from the passage.

  • Prayer Vigil
We are organizing a 24 hour prayer vigil for Saturday, March 28. We would like to be in prayer around the clock that day. To make sure we cover all 24 hours, we will have an online sign-up with 30 minute time slots. You and your family can sign up for as many slots as you would like. To sign up, please click on the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e49aca629a3fc1-prayer (NOTE: you do not need to provide your email address.).

Don’t forget that you can always email prayer requests to the Prayer Chain ministry at prayer@gospellifechurch.net . There is no question that one of the greatest postures we can have in a time like this is prayer - prayer for our elders, prayer for our church body, prayer for our neighbors, prayer for our nation, etc. There is a reason God prompted us to study prayer together at the beginning of this year.

  • Other Ministries
This social distancing does not mean that the various ministries in the church will be halted. Pastor Dave and Keith will be working with the ministry leaders to implement different ways to minister during this time, including ministry to the elderly and shut-ins. We will be doing everything we can to build up one another in the faith and fulfill the ministry that God has given to us.

  • Giving
Because we will not be meeting for the next three weeks, the way in which you give may need to change during this time. We praise the Lord that we have been blessed financially as a church with cash reserves and record giving this year that will help us weather this difficult time. Here are some ways you can continue to give:
    • Mail
You can always mail a check to: Gospel Life Church, PO Box 187, Evans City, PA 16033.
    • Automatic eBanking
You may not be aware that your bank can mail checks for you. This is an easy way to make giving recurring on a weekly or monthly basis and not pay for postage.

We know that this new “feel” for church will be a temporary adjustment. But be assured that your leadership’s commitment to our calling has not changed and that we can still Ground, Grow, and Go in the Gospel in new and creative ways! We are confident that God is going to use this time for His glory!
